Introduction: Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a serious syndrome, with chronic symptoms and various complications, and difficult to control most of the time, currently being one of the biggest public health problems in our country. A study published by the Brazilian Society of Diabetes (SBD, 2019) points out that 50% of individuals diagnosed with DM did not even know they were diabetic. The incidence of these two diseases has increased in emerging countries due to changes related to wrong eating habits. Objective: The tendency of the relationship between arterial hypertension (AH) in patients with diabetes mellitus, in both diseases combined, was investigated, analyzing its association with factors that increase the risk of these diseases. Method: A literature review was carried out using the MEDLINE/PubMed, BIREME, Lilacs, SCIELO and Google Scholar databases, with articles published between 2013 and 2022. 24 manuscripts were selected to demonstrate the factors that most influenced this relationship between the diseases. Results: The articles revealed a worrying general panorama, with a significant increase in arterial hypertension and DM2 in the analyzed groups, and low adherence to eating habits that are known to be beneficial to health and, consequently, to the preventive treatment of these diseases in these regions. Conclusion: It was demonstrated that the relationship of arterial hypertension in patients with DM is an important risk factor in the population, in several Brazilian states, particularly in the South and Northeast regions. Thus, the study corroborates current preventive demands, relating the control of arterial hypertension in DM patients.
