Abstract

Introduction and objective: Drug-induced lupus erythematosus (LID) is a lupus-like syndrome temporally associated with continuous exposure to medications, many of which have not yet been effectively documented. Therefore, the objective of this study was to systematically search the scientific literature for primary articles related to the use of proton pump inhibitors in the induction of lupus or enhancement of pre-existing lupus and to verify whether the use of proton pump inhibitors induces or aggravates lupus erythematosus. Method: a systematic review was carried out, registered on the PROSPERO platform, searching the main databases (PubMed and VHL) between 1999 and 2022, with the keywords lupus and proton pump inhibitors, which followed the PRISMA recommendations. Results: Reports and case series were found that demonstrate an important association between the use of proton pump inhibitors and lupus, which presents in a heterogeneous form. Conclusion: Therefore, although it is not possible to identify a pattern, it is clear that there is an association between this medication used on a global scale and autoimmune disease.
