One of the authors (FC) describes a historical moment that he witnessed as a medical student at the Federal University of Pernambuco, in 1958, when the competition for the Chair of Anatomy took place, won by a young 28-year-old doctor from Minas Gerais, Professor Antônio Zapalá, who had all his training, since graduation, directed towards an academic career dedicated to Anatomy. The examination was chaired by Professor Barros Lima, full professor of the chair of Orthopedics, and composed of the following professors: Rui Neves Batista (University of Recife, Brazil), Álvaro Froes da Fonseca (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil), Rafael de Menezes e Silva (Salvador, Brazil) and Ruy Romano da Silva Romariz (Faculty of Medicine and Surgery of Pará, Belém, Brazil). The thesis title that Professor Zapalá defended was “Contribution to the study of the anatomy of vessels and “lienal vascular zones”. Anatomical data in man and experimental data in dogs for application in partial lienectomy”, which was the winner.
