Abstract

Objective: To describe the microbiological profile of surveillance cultures in patients admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), as well as to analyze clinical and sociodemographic characteristics. Methodology: This is an observational, analytical, retrospective, cross-sectional study with patients admitted to Intensive Care Units (ICUs) of a private hospital complex, who underwent surveillance culture collection, from March 2020 to December of 2021. Results: The initial sample consisted of patients who met eligibility criteria, it was 526 patients, of whom 70 (13.3%) had some positive surveillance culture at the time of admission to the ICU. The bacterium that was positive for the largest number of cultures was Klebsiella pneumoniae, responsible for 29.49% of the cultures. The mean age was 70 years, sepsis was the clinical condition with the highest mortality rate in these patients, with a mortality of 85.7% in those who developed this condition, and a significant p of 0.0001. Conclusion: The results obtained in this study show a high frequency of bacteria gram-negative in surveillance cultures, as well as a high mortality in these patients when infected. This type of research is of great importance to design health strategies aimed at controlling infections and their consequences.
